"Keep the fire burning” is a phrase frequently used to inspire passion and perseverance for something—or someone.
But what exactly does it mean? And more importantly, in the context of a relationship, how do we keep that flame of love burning for a lifetime?
If you have ever built a fire, you know it follows a clear process: you need the right kindling, proper airflow, and a steady supply of wood arranged just right. But building a fire is only the beginning. Anyone who has ever had to keep a fire burning for days or weeks knows it demands continuous effort and vigilance to sustain a steady flame.
Hold that image of a real fire in your mind—the care and consistency required to maintain it—as we explore what it truly means to be a guardian of the flame.
The Life of Fire Keepers
Envision a home where the family depends entirely on a consistent fire. To keep the flame alive day and night takes dedicated Fire Keepers—guardians who take ownership of the warmth, safety, and light for their loved ones.
Picture the wood crackling, flames dancing, and smoke rising. Imagine the occasional presence of wild animals, wary of the fire’s threat, while children sleep soundly, warmed by its glow on a chilly evening. The fire impacts everyone around it, every moment of every day.
As Fire Keepers, their lifestyle revolves around fueling the fire. From dawn till dusk, they tend to it, adjusting the placement and type of fuel as needed. They maintain a scheduled routine but remain flexible based on the flame’s intensity.
While tending the fire, they remain oriented toward it, giving it consistent focus and attention. Even if they step away, they routinely look back to check on the flame’s well-being.
They understand the fire’s true value. If it goes out, reigniting it is difficult and demands precious time and resources. The repercussions of a dwindling fire are severe—ranging from uncooked food and diminished productivity to compromised safety and discomfort on cold nights. Maintaining the fire’s strength is a constant priority because they recognize its significance.
They also cultivate an environment alongside fellow Fire Keepers who offer mutual encouragement and support to prevent burnout. Reminders in their surroundings reinforce why preserving the fire is vital.
In short: being Fire Keepers requires specific action—a willingness and effort to do whatever it takes to sustain the flame.
But how do they know if their actions are effective? The proof is in the outcome.
A flame is not a tangible object or a single event; it is experienced through the warmth it radiates. The outcome of the Fire Keepers' dedication is a feeling of warmth, which yields greater safety, provision, and comfort for the entire home.
Becoming Love Keepers
Just as Fire Keepers are guardians of the warmth of their home, God calls us to be Love Keepers—guardians who intentionally nurture the flame of love in both our marriages and our walk with Him.
Throughout my career, thousands of couples have asked me:
- “We love each other. We want our marriage to stay strong. How do we keep our love burning?"
- Or, even more frequently: “We have lost our love—how do we reignite the flame?”
My professional work has focused on helping couples build a lifestyle that keeps love alive. The foundational truth is simple: the main principles of being Fire Keepers are identical to being Love Keepers.
Marriage is not a fire you light once on your wedding day and hope it stays lit on its own. Just like a physical fire, keeping love alive requires intentional action, and the outcome is the feeling of romantic love.
To nurture this enduring connection, we can use the L-O-V-E action plan:
- L – Lifestyle: Love Keepers adopt daily, deliberate habits. This routine allows room for spontaneity, attentive listening, and thoughtful responses. Seizing the moment and scheduling time to be a source of happiness is an integral part of this lifestyle.
- O – Oriented: Love Keepers are focused and oriented toward keeping the flame of love alive within the relationship. They remain attuned to the strength of the emotional connection—ready to take action whenever the flame requires care.
- V – Value: Love Keepers understand the significance of maintaining love and fueling the relationship with intentional actions, recognizing the difference between nurturing love and neglecting it. This value shapes their identity.
- E – Environment: Love Keepers create a supportive environment for sustaining the love-keeping lifestyle, focus, and values. This environment includes like-minded individuals who encourage healthy marriage principles and prevent burnout.
How do we know if our actions as Love Keepers are working? The outcome is similar to a physical flame: it is not an object or event, but a deep feeling of warmth and connection—emitted by continuous effort.
A Set-Apart Purpose
Recently, our church sermon series emphasized the concept of being set apart. This means being entrusted with a special purpose: we are called to be Love Keepers with both God and our spouse, prioritizing these relationships above all else (as commanded in Matthew 22:37–40). This commitment sets us apart from worldly distractions.

The remarkable outcome of living a set-apart life is the warmth created when we keep love burning—sustaining both our passion for God and romantic love within our marriage.
As fellow Love Keepers, we know we can make a lasting impact on our families, friends, and communities. Yet, we also know many couples struggle, asking, “What if the flame of love in our marriage has dimmed?” or “What if my once fervent passion for God has faded?”
Regardless of the current intensity of your flame, there is always an opportunity to revive and sustain it. Being Love Keepers in our own home and sharing this wisdom with others is our calling.
This is our legacy.
